# Grid operations

> Use the multi-column menu in the Mammoth data grid to hide, show or remove several selected columns at once, or run Find & Replace across text columns.

The multi-column menu applies one operation to several columns at once. It is for anyone who needs to hide, show, remove, or find and replace across a selection. When you select two or more column headers in the data grid, a **multi-column menu** appears. This is separate from the per-column menu—it provides bulk operations that act on your entire selection at once.

---

## Open the multi-column menu

1. Click the first column header to select it
2. Hold **Ctrl** (Windows) or **Cmd** (Mac) and click additional column headers, or hold **Shift** and click another header to select the whole range between them
3. A 3-dot menu button appears on any of the selected column headers
4. Click the 3-dot button to open the multi-column menu

The menu is disabled while the pipeline is loading or applying changes. Wait for processing to complete. The three visibility options are also disabled while the pipeline has a task in error. The menu's actions do nothing in preview mode.

---

## Menu options

The multi-column menu shows five operations, organized into two groups.

### Visibility

| Operation | What it does |
| --- | --- |
| **Hide** | Hides all selected columns from the current View, in addition to any columns that are already hidden. Data is preserved—the columns just become invisible. |
| **Hide only these** | Hides the selected columns and shows every other column. Columns hidden earlier are shown again. |
| **Show only these** | Shows only the selected columns and hides everything else. |

These visibility changes are Display Changes on this View—they do not affect other Views or delete any data. You can review or revert them in the Display Changes modal.

---

### Data pipeline

The following operations appear under a **Data Pipeline** section label. They open a Functions Panel and add a task to the pipeline when applied.

| Operation | What it does |
| --- | --- |
| **Remove** | Opens Remove Column with all selected columns, and adds a task that removes them from this View. |
| **Find & Replace** | Opens Find & Replace with all selected TEXT columns pre-selected, and with the View's current filter as its condition. Disabled if no TEXT column is in the selection. |

**Note:** Remove is a pipeline task, so later tasks cannot use the removed columns. To bring the columns back, suspend or delete the Remove Column task. Use Hide if you only want to clear columns from the grid.

---

## Menu behavior by selection type

The five menu items are always present, but **Find & Replace** is enabled or disabled depending on whether any TEXT column is in your selection. All other options (Hide, Hide only these, Show only these, Remove) are active regardless of which types you select.

| Selection | Hide | Hide only these | Show only these | Remove | Find & Replace |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Only TEXT columns | Active | Active | Active | Active | **Active** |
| Only NUMERIC columns | Active | Active | Active | Active | Disabled |
| Only DATE columns | Active | Active | Active | Active | Disabled |
| TEXT + NUMERIC | Active | Active | Active | Active | **Active** |
| TEXT + DATE | Active | Active | Active | Active | **Active** |
| NUMERIC + DATE | Active | Active | Active | Active | Disabled |
| TEXT + NUMERIC + DATE | Active | Active | Active | Active | **Active** |

**Rule:** Find & Replace is active whenever **at least one TEXT column** is in your selection. The column types of the non-TEXT columns in your selection do not affect it.

---

## Visibility persistence

| Operation | Persists after refresh? |
| --- | --- |
| Hide | Yes—saved with the View as a Display Change |
| Hide only these | Yes—saved with the View as a Display Change |
| Show only these | Yes—saved with the View as a Display Change |

To review or revert hidden columns, open **Display Changes** or use the Column Browser.

## Other grid interactions

- **Select rows:** click a row number in the first column. **Ctrl** or **Cmd** adds or removes a row, and **Shift** selects a range. Clicking any cell clears the row and column selection.
- **Copy and paste:** right-click a cell to get **Copy**, **Copy with Headers**, **Paste** and **Cut**. When you paste into a NUMERIC column, a value that is not a valid number becomes empty.
- **Rename a column:** double-click the column name in the header, or use **Rename Column** in the [column menu](https://docs.mammoth.io/learn/transform/column-menu/). Renaming is disabled while a pipeline task is in error.
- **Resize a column:** drag the right edge of the header. The width is saved with the View.
- **Sort and freeze:** use the column menu. See [Sort your data](https://docs.mammoth.io/learn/transform/column-menu/#sort-your-data) and [Freeze a column](https://docs.mammoth.io/learn/transform/column-menu/#freeze-a-column).
- **Edit cells:** once cell editing is enabled for the dataset, double-click a cell to edit it. Edits are listed as an **Edit Cells** task in the pipeline.

## Common questions

**Q: Can I use the multi-column menu with just one column selected?**\
A: No—the multi-column menu only appears when two or more columns are selected.

**Q: What happens to hidden columns after I refresh the page?**\
A: They stay hidden. Visibility changes (Hide, Hide only these, Show only these) are saved with the View as Display Changes. To unhide columns, use the Column Browser or revert them in Display Changes.

**Q: Find & Replace is disabled. Why?**\
A: None of the selected columns are TEXT type. Include at least one TEXT column in your selection to enable Find & Replace.

**Q: I removed the wrong columns. Can I undo this?**\
A: Yes. Remove adds a Remove Column task to the pipeline. Suspend or delete that task to bring the columns back.

**Q: Can I mix column types in a multi-column selection?**\
A: Yes. You can select any combination of TEXT, NUMERIC, and DATE columns. The only operation affected by type is Find & Replace, which only applies to the TEXT columns in your selection.
