# Column Management

> Reference for the Column Management functions in Mammoth: add, copy, combine, convert, remove and split columns, with settings for each.

The Column Management category has functions for adding, copying, combining, converting, and removing columns. These are pipeline tasks—they modify your dataset structure and re-run every time the pipeline refreshes.

To open the function list, click the **"Describe your transformation"** bar (or a **+** button in the Pipeline panel) and select **Column Management**.

> **Renaming columns:** There is no Rename Column function in this category. To rename a column, open its 3-dot menu in the data grid and select **Rename Column**. This is a display-level change and does not create a pipeline task.

## Add Column

Add Column adds one or more empty columns to your View. Each column gets a name and a type at creation—you populate the values using other pipeline tasks such as Label & Insert Values or Math Function.

![Add Column panel open, showing three rows each with a column title](https://docs.mammoth.io/api/v1/images/20260417_124429_AddColumnpanelopenshowingthreerowseachwithacolumntitle1.jpg)

**How to configure:**

- **Define new column title**—enter a name for the column.
- **Choose new column type**—select **Text**, **Number**, or **Date**.
- **Add more**—click **Add more** to add additional columns in the same task. Each row is independent—different names and types can be set per column.
- To remove a column from the list before applying, click the trash icon on that row.

## Copy Columns

Copy Columns creates a duplicate of one or more columns. It appears in the function list only when the feature is enabled for your workspace. Useful for preserving originals before applying transformations, or for creating a version of a column in a different type or format.

![Copy Columns panel with brand, customer_age and sales_rep selected and new names such as Copy of brand](https://docs.mammoth.io/api/v1/images/20260511_175508_Screenshot2026-04-27110616.jpg)

**How to configure:**

- **Select columns to duplicate**—click **+** next to any column in the left panel to add it to the copy list. A search box appears when the list is long.
- **Copied columns**—each added column appears on the right as a source → destination mapping. The default name is "Copy of [column name]"—edit it directly in the name field.
- To remove a column from the copy list, click the X on that row.

To configure how each copy is written, hover over a row and click its edit icon to open the output options:

- **Place in**—choose **New Column** to write the copy to a new column, or **Existing Column** to overwrite an existing column.
- **Type**—choose the output type for the copy. The options available depend on the source column type:
  - Text columns: **T** (Text) only
  - Number columns: **T** (Text) or **#** (Number), with format controls (%, $, decimal places)
  - Date columns: **T** (Text) or the date icon, with a **Date Format** dropdown to control how the date displays in the copy

The other icons that appear on hover are:

- **Filter icon**—adds a condition to restrict the copy to rows matching a filter
- **X icon**—removes that column from the copy list

## Combine Columns & Text

Combine Columns & Text merges values from multiple columns—and optionally static text—into a single new column. You can mix columns and fixed text values in any order to control exactly how the combined output reads.

![Combine Columns & Text panel combining store_name, a separator and location into a new column named Store_label](https://docs.mammoth.io/api/v1/images/20260511_175545_combine_column1.jpg)

**How to configure:**

- **Define values or columns to combine**—click in the input field and start typing. Column names from your dataset appear as suggestions with their type icons—select one to add it as a column chip. To add a fixed text value (for example, a separator like " - " or a prefix like "ID:"), type the text and select **Add... "[your value]"** from the autocomplete. It is added as a text chip. Mix columns and text in any order to build the combined output.
- To remove any item, click the X on its chip. Click **Clear** to remove everything.
- **Add Condition**—optionally restrict the combination to rows that meet a condition. Clicking this opens a modal where you can describe the condition in plain language and click **Generate**, or build it manually using the **Where** column and operator dropdowns. Click **Apply Condition** when done.
- **Place in**—choose **New Column** and enter a name, or choose **Existing Column**.

**Example:** To create a display label like "Chic Boutique - Miami" from a `store_name` and `location` column, add the `store_name` chip, type " - " and select Add to insert it as a text chip, then add the `location` chip. Name the output `store_label`.

## Convert Column Type

Convert Column Type changes how a column's values are displayed—as text, numbers, or dates. You can convert multiple columns in a single task, with each row configured independently.

![Convert Column Type panel with three conversion rows for customer_age, brand and a date column, and a data-loss note](https://docs.mammoth.io/api/v1/images/20260417_124716_ConvertColumnTypepanelopenshowingthreeconversionrows_customer_age1.jpg)

**How to configure:**

- **Select columns to convert**—choose the source column from the dropdown. Each row handles one column conversion.
- **Select new column type**—choose the target type. The options shown depend on the source column type:
  - Number column: **Date** or **Text**
  - Text column: **Date** or **Number**
  - Date column: **Number** or **Text**
- **Format Output**—appears when converting to Date or from Date to Text. When converting to Number, number format controls appear instead. For dates, configure two settings:
  - **Convention**—choose **Universal**, **UK**, **US**, or **Custom** to set the date convention for the output.
  - **Format string**—choose a format from the dropdown (for example YYYY/MM/DD, YYYY/MM/DD HH24:MI:SS, YYYY/MM/DD HH:MI:SS am, YYYY-MM-DD) or select **Custom** and type your own format string.
- **Define Source Format**—when converting Text to Date, click the gear icon next to the format string to tell Mammoth what format the date data is already in before conversion. Options are:
  - **Source - Auto**—Mammoth detects the format automatically
  - **Source - DD/MM/YYYY (Day First)**
  - **Source - MM/DD/YYYY (Month First)**
  - **Source - Custom (multiple formats)**—enter semicolon-separated format strings to handle columns where dates appear in more than one format
- **Convert more columns**—click **+ Convert more columns** to add another conversion row to the same task.
- To remove a conversion row, click the trash icon on that row.

> If a value cannot be converted to the target type—for example, "John Doe" being converted to Number or Date—it will be given a null (blank) value.

**Example:** An `order_date` column imported as Text contains values in "YYYY/MM/DD" format. Select the column, choose Date as the target type, set Source Format to Source - Auto, and set Format Output to YYYY/MM/DD. The column is now a proper Date type and can be used in date filters and calculations.

## Remove Column

Remove Column removes one or more columns from your View.

![Remove Column panel open, showing a searchable column checklist](https://docs.mammoth.io/api/v1/images/20260417_124811_RemoveColumnpanelopenshowingasearchablecolumnchecklist1.jpg)

**How to configure:**

- **Select column(s) to remove**—check one or more columns from the list. Columns appear with their type icons (T for text, # for number, clock for date). Use the search box to find columns quickly.
- Selected columns appear as chips in the **Columns to be removed** area on the right. Click the X on a chip to deselect it, or click **Clear** to deselect all.

> Removing a column is a pipeline task. To restore a removed column, suspend or delete the Remove Column task in the Pipeline panel.

## Split Into Multiple Columns

Split Into Multiple Columns divides the contents of a single text column into multiple new columns based on a delimiter character. Mammoth creates the specified number of columns, each containing one part of the split value.

![Split Into Multiple Columns panel open, showing Source column dropdown](https://docs.mammoth.io/api/v1/images/20260417_124853_SplitIntoMultipleColumnspanelopenshowingSourcecolumndropdown1.jpg)

**How to configure:**

- **Source column**—choose the text column to split.
- **Delimiter**—enter the character to split on, for example a comma, space, hyphen, or pipe. The info icon next to the label shows a contextual example—for instance, for values like "UK, USA, France" a comma delimiter splits the value into 3 columns.
- **No. of Columns**—enter the number of output columns to create. The value must be between 2 and 50.

**Example:** A `name` column contains values like "Lightweight Box Model-3887 #39". Set the delimiter to `-` and No. of Columns to 2. Mammoth creates two new columns—the first containing "Product Name" and the second containing " Model number".
