Explore Cards

Explore Cards generate quick visual and statistical representations of your data. You can use Explore cards to detect patterns and outliers by visually navigating the data. Explore Cards help you conduct exploratory data analysis on any column of your dataset.

The main use cases of Explore Cards are:

  • To get a quick data distribution summary

  • To filter data as they are interactive

Adding Explore Cards

You can add Explore Cards using one of the following methods:

  • Clicking on the icon image icon on any of the column opens the corresponding Explore Card.

  • Via the Column browser

You can choose to collapse or expand the Explore panel with the up and down arrow in the grid, as shown below:

Types of Cards

Explore Cards can be created on any of the columns. Depending on the column data type, Explore Cards differ in the representation of that column’s contents.

Following two types of Explore Cards are available in Mammoth:

  1. Text Explore Card: Lists unique values for the text columns.

  2. Range Explore Card: Displays ranges of values present in the numeric and date columns.

Text Explore Cards

The Text Explore Card displays a list of unique values present in the corresponding text column. By default, count for each of the values will appear in the list. One can click on any of the values and filter by the values.

Supported options

Following options are present on each Text Explore Card:

  1. Change Aggregation Menu: You can change this Card to see another aggregation. This appears at the top right of the Explore Card. See Changing Aggregation/Granularity in Explore Cards

  2. Search: You can search for any of the unique values in the corresponding column by searching through this menu. This appears on the right bar of the Explore Card.

  3. Sort Menu: You can change the order of items by choosing to sort by the value or the count. This menu appears below the Search. See Sorting in Explore Card.

  4. Copy values to clipboard: You can copy the list of unique values to your clipboard.

  5. Export list as csv: You can export list of unique values as a CSV file.

Selecting values

The Text Explore Card is interactive. You can click on any of the values in the Card. Multiple values can be selected by using shift+ctrl/cmd keys. To undo the selection, click anywhere else.

Filtering data & other options

A temporary menu appears to the right of the Explore Card contents when a value is selected. This menu has the following two buttons:

  • Filter: Clicking on this allows for temporary filtering of data. See Creating Explore Card filters for more options.

  • Options: Clicking on this brings up the following menu:

    1. Replace all values like this: Allows for replacing of selected values. This brings up Bulk Replace task.

    2. Remove all values like this: Allows for removal of selected values from the grid. This is a shortcut to the Apply Filter task.

    3. Keep only values like this: Allows for removal of all unselected values from the grid. This is a shortcut to the Apply Filter task.

Resizing Explore Cards

Text Explore Cards can be resized to show complete values. Like this:

Note

If there are blank values in the data, text Explore Card shows them at the top of the list.

Range Explore Card

This Card will display a few ranges of values from a numeric or a date column. By default, the ranges are represented as a graph with each of these values. You can change that to see the Card as a list.

Range Explore Cards offer two view modes:

  1. Graph view: It displays a graph of the various ranges.

  2. List view: It displays a list of the various ranges. This view will look similar to a text Explore Card except that the values listed are ranges and not unique values from the data.

These two options can be toggled using the toggle button at the right-bottom of any range Explore Card.

In either of these representations, the Card will additionally display a set of summaries about the column. Look at the following table to see the list of summaries displayed in these Cards:

When the Card loads for the first time, Mammoth looks at the data and decides the best resolution to use for the data. You can override the resolution by using the Change Aggregation Menu.

Supported options

Following menus are present on the Explore Card:

  1. Change Aggregation Menu: You can change this Card to view another aggregation or adjust the resolution of the ranges in the Card. This appears at the top right of the Explore Card. See Changing Aggregation/Granularity in Explore Cards.

  2. Search: You can search for any of the unique values in the corresponding column by searching through this menu. This appears on the right bar of the Explore Card it is being viewed as a list.

  3. Sort Menu: You can change the order of items by choosing to sort by the value or the count. This menu appears below the Search when viewed as a list. See Sorting in Explore Card.

  4. Switch representation: Allows toggling between viewing as a list and viewing as a graph.

  5. Copy values to clipboard: You can copy the list of unique values to your clipboard.

  6. Export list as CSV: You can export list of unique values as a CSV file.

  7. Export as a PNG: You can export the chart/graph view of range explore cards as PNG files.

Changing Aggregation/Granularity in Explore Cards

You can change the aggregation or granularity in Explore Cards. This menu supports the following options:

  1. Show values by: Enables change of the aggregation in the Card. By default, it displays the count of rows against the unique value/range of the selected column. It can be changed to aggregation of any numeric column. The list of supported functions are SUM, AVG, MIN, MAX, STDDEV. See Numeric functions.

  2. Granularity: Helps in adjusting the resolution of the range. For example, numeric columns can be seen as 10s, 100s, 1000s etc. Date columns can be seen as days, months, and years. There is a limit on how many bars can be plotted and if the number of bars exceeds that limit, the Card automatically switches to a higher resolution to make the plotting possible.

Sorting in Explore Card

The sort menu shows on the right of an Explore Card in the following situations:

  1. The Explore Card is a text Explore Card.

  1. The Explore Card is a range Explore Card with list view.

The Cards can be sorted in the following ways:

  1. By aggregation value. This option will appear as SUM, COUNT and so on.

  2. By unique value/range. This option will sort the values alphabetically.

You can also choose order (ascending/descending) for sorting.

Creating Explore Card filters

When you filter a value (or values) in Explore Cards, the filter appears on top of the card as yellow capsules. You can convert these filters to tasks in pipeline or even edit them as shown below. It is also possible to apply filters on multiple Explore Cards.

  • Add Explore Card filters as task:
